Growing vegetables in front gardens
03 Nov 2009
We decided 4 years ago to grow vegetables in our front garden, simply because it was an unused space and had reasonable sun. What we hadn't anticipated is that growing them at the front is much more sociable than using only the back garden because a surprising number of people stop to look, make a comment, discuss gardening or point out the different plants to their children. One lady from the next street even knocked on our door a few months back to tell us that she had been inspired to start doing the same - she now has a fine row of runner beans in front of her house! So at a minimum you should get some vegetables, and you may well also get some extra opportunities to meet neighbours and discuss environmental issues.
[Slightly late in the season photo. Note rain water butt on left - additional water can be obtained by syphoning used bath water directly onto garden. See: http://www.reuk.co.uk/Watergreen-Syphon-Pump-Recycle-Bath-Water.htm]

Great that you are going to start. We wondered about an honesty box too but haven't tried it yet. As far as we can tell, no-one has ever helped themselves to the veg!
