01 Apr 2009
This new fitness trend has been founded by Vandana Alimchandani and she holds Bollywood Groove fitness classes at Pineapple Studios in central London. It is a fun fitness trend involving lots of Bollywood style movement and dance to Bollywood music. It started off with one weekly class of seven and now there are fifteen classes of 25-30 people each week.
As well as being a good way to improve cardiovascular health, develop muscle tone and lose weight dancing is great fun and is an ideal way to forget the stresses of the day and all the many to do lists we all have.
Other dancing also creates a feel good factor such as ballet which is great for posture and flexibility, ballroom dancing which improves posture, flexibility and endurance and creative dancing which improve lung capacity, aerobic capacity and flexibility. When dancing the foxtrot, for example, you're taking long, sweeping steps backwards. That's very different to walking forward on a treadmill or jogging. Ballroom dancing works the backs of the thighs and buttock muscles differently from many other types of exercise.
Another popular dance Salsa dancing builds endurance and stamina, helps with weight loss
relieves stress, may help lower blood pressure and reduce cholesterol levels and even helps you release toxins via sweating.
Dancing is a moderate-intensive activity and as well as preventing cardio-vascular disease it also helps prevent diseases such as diabetes and some cancers. Dancing also decreases blood pressure and strengthens the bones of your legs and hips.
Dancing is a social form of exercise and a 21-year study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that dancing can reduce the risk of Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia in the elderly so it is a great way to achieve longevity. Memorizing dancing steps and working with a partner, both provide mental challenges that are crucial for brain health.
The more you dance the more you improve your cardio fitness and the less tired you will be you will also feel happier and more positive. This is a great way to improve your health and develop a sense of wellbeing.
