Viva - Vegetarians International Voice for Animals
Active encouragement of vegetarian and vegan diets
29 Jun 2010
“The human appetite for animal flesh is a driving force behind virtually every major category of environmental damage – deforestation, erosion, fresh water scarcity, air and water pollution and climate change” (WorldWatch Institute, Washington). At sea, fishing has brought all the world's oceans to the point of collapse. Yet still politicians fail to act.
Millions of children in the developing world die from hunger - alongside fields of high-quality food, destined for the West’s farmed animals. The startling truth is that meat causes starvation.
The science is now overwhelming - vegetarians are healthier than meat eaters and are likely to live longer. Yet the food industry continues aggressively to promote animal products to our children, helping to destroy their health and threatening their future.
With the simple decision to stop eating animals, you cease to play a part in this destruction.
We propose that government policy should actively encourage and support more people in converting to a vegetarian or vegan diet.

I came across research by Jane Plant, UK, which says that dairy products are responsible for the high incidence of Breast cancer in the UK. Breast cancer occurence is very low in China where there is very little milk and dairy products used.
I have also come across various websites which have elaborated on how cancers cannot grow in an alkaline cell environment - and this can be nurtured through high alkali-genic foods and these are basically fruits and vegetables, preferably consumed raw or steamed.
I can vouch for this since my son who had bladder cancer was able to arrest its growth by going on a high fruit and vegetable diet. We only need to look at the US, where 42% of the population gets cancer at some time in their lives and where meat eating is extremely high to understand the connection between meat eating and cancer. Since many foods slow poison us over decades, we often do not understand the cause-effect connections between food and disease.
Finally, since we began working on food and health, we have come into contact with several vegans and vegetarians who have not had to see a doctor in 2 or 3 decades. Nature meant us to be healthy, eating foods appropriate for our bodies.
