Consume less, Reduce Waste and enjoy your life
Global warming is the most serious environmental challenge of our time. It is more urgent and its dangers are more fundamental than most of us realize. One of the main reason behind global warming is waste. Waste is mainly due to our wild over-consumption: we consume stuff we have and stuff we dont need. That's way I'm focusing my whole action this year on one simple theme: Reduce waste. My climate plan/campaign seeks to educate myself, my kids and all people i can reach about how quickly we must act. We have an obligation to be responsible stewards for... Read more

Promoting local economy is the third in Gandhi's Trinity; I have recently taken a huge step: I gave up (renounced, a key principle of Gandhi) my habit of buying imported beer and wine; on my quest to buy local I surprised myself to find beer and wine, locally produced, that are exceptionally good; this really took a shift in attitude, but did not require me to sacrifice quality; why have I been resisting this for so long?

We are depleting our fresh water at an alarming rate. In the west the average person uses around 466 litres daily! I've just worked mine out using this water calculator (http://www.csgnetwork.com/waterusagecalc.html - its American so works it out in gallons go to converter to find out litres) and its 355.8 litres for my household (of two) per day! We are reducing our flushing by half, ensuring we only do one full load wash per week, and alternating shower days - people are too clean these days anyway!

Wash Your Car On The Grass Or At A Car Wash
Soap and dirt from washing your car can flow into storm drains and into lakes and rivers, making them polluted and harmful to animals. If you wash your car on the grass the ground can filter the water naturally. Better yet, take it to a car wash! Car washes can recycle and/or treat the water, and they use way less water than the average home car wash.

Shower to toilet, why losing so much water?
Every shower corresponds to 80 litres in average and 8 for flushing the toilet. Knowing we flush 35 times/week the toilet, this corresponds to 240 litres: By using the shower's water for the toilet, we would save around 240 litres per person per week... by couple of billion people, this can make a huge difference!

Investment in rainforest preservation
To stop rainforest destruction we have to provide financial incentives to those that live there. By investing personally in projects which provide sustainable alternatives we can have a direct impact on arresting deforestation and improving the welfare of smoe of the poorest communities on the planet - see www.cochabamba.coop

Ecological sanitation (REAL ecosan---waterless/dry) closes material cycles closest to their point of origin. Low entropy. Eliminates water pollution by human & livestock manure and returns its nutrients to the land. Begin installing ecological sanitation in the Minority World/North as the example for the Majority World/South to follow. Not, as we are now doing, vice versa! Clean up our own act before we preach to others.

Avoid using food and cosmetics containing Palm Oil.
Palm oil is an ingredient in many everyday items such as margarine, chocolate, chips and shampoo. However to satisfy this demand, large areas of rainforest are cut down or peatlands burned to make way for Palm plantations. This leads to a loss of biodiversity and increase of CO2 emissions. Try to use products which don't contain palm oil, or use it in a sustainable way.

Choose to be a pilgrim not a tourist
"Pilgrims treat the planet with reverence and gratitude. Tourists value the Earth and all her natural riches only in terms of usefulness to themselves. Pilgrims perceive the planet as sacred and recognise the intrinsic value of all life. The living Earth is good in itself with all its grace and beauty" Satsh Kumar.

Climate Change Solution Catalyst
For those of us who are not yet obviously affected by climate change it is easy to ignore it. Those that choose not to ignore it write books or articles like this one in an attempt to muster support but there is an underlying problem. How does a little person, such as me for instance, actually MAKE a contribution to correct something as big as climate change ? What can I actually DO ? I can almost hear the wails of “insulate”, “drive less” etc. etc. but look around and you’ll probably find you’re the only one doing all the... Read more

If we all grew our own food, even in cities we would have better finances, better health cleaner air. We need to plant back yard gardens it is not hard, no matter where you live. Even in cities one can have a raised bed of produce or join community gardens, plant and share, plant and trade. Plant for others that can't, trade food for other services. I am growing my garden now and i share my bounty with neighbors.

Food is sometimes packaged in ridiculous amounts of plastic and foil and cardboard. Why? Surely it would be cheaper for manufacturers and better for the planet if goods came packaged in the very minimum of packaging?

I'm surprised at the large number of friends who shop more than once a week. Because we live miles out in the country, we try to drive into the nearest town as infrequently as possible. The key for us, to minimising journeys, is the weekly menu. That way we buy all we need once a week - and cut down on food waste as well as greenhouse emissions.

Global fish stocks are under serious threat. There are many reasons for this, over-consumption, pollution, climate change... many of the problems feel far above our individual capabilities to undo, however there is a way to make a difference! The knowledge of how our food is grown, where it comes from and what goes into it is largely disconnected from the minds of the general public as they walk around Tesco’s. I heard recently a vox pop in which a child was asked where cheese came from, and to my everlasting amusement answered; moles mine it! This basic function of our everyday lives should be understood by everyone from childhood; especially in this food impoverished world.

My idea allows a large amount of food to be grown in a small space using concrete grow boxes. These you make yourself. For about ten dollars you can make a grow box that can hold about 130 vegetables and only takes up about 4 feet of floor space. My website tells you how to make them yourself. www.concretegrowbox.com
